The Ulinity

2024

The Ulinity is an examination of masculinity and femininity not as fixed categories, but as a spectrum. The project begins from a personal place: the question of what it means to be a man, or simply a person, in a culture that tends to offer only two options.

Society often presents masculinity and femininity as a binary, but the work approaches them the way biology does, as qualities that exist in varying degrees across all people, shifting and coexisting rather than canceling each other out. Estrogen and testosterone don't belong exclusively to one body type. Neither do the associations we build around them.

Everyday objects with gendered associations are deliberately composed with one another, held in tension and in conversation. No people appear in the work. That absence is intentional: because this experience is deeply personal, the work doesn't represent it it reflects it. Viewers are left to bring their own definitions, their own relationships to what they're looking at, and their own sense of where they fall in the space between.
